Oven to Heaven
Who we are and what we're doing

A wake, not a funeral.

There is a difference and the entire personality of this website lives inside it.

A pale wooden cremation urn wearing a straw sun hat, tortoiseshell sunglasses and a garland of marigolds and frangipani.
A wake, not a funeral

A funeral is a performance. Everybody stands in a room in uncomfortable shoes being handled by a man in a suit whose actual job is selling you an urn with an upgrade path. Everybody speaks in the special voice. Nobody says the word dead.

A wake is the opposite. A wake is people getting drunk and telling the most unflattering stories they have about someone they loved, and crying in the middle of the punchline, and then laughing again. A wake is the only funeral tradition humans have ever invented that actually works, because it lets grief and comedy occupy the same room at the same time, which is where they have always lived anyway.

This website is a wake.

What we actually do here

We publish three kinds of thing, and they are all the same thing:

  • Numbers the industry would rather you not have. What direct cremation costs versus what they quote you. What the FTC Funeral Rule entitles you to. Which line items on that itemised statement are optional and which are invented.
  • Honest reviews of memorial stuff. Urns, ashes jewellery, keepsakes, and the entire beautiful weird end of the aisle. With opinions. Including the ones where we say a $400 urn is a $60 vase with a lid and a grief tax.
  • The company. Pieces about pet death, about the grief nobody gives you leave for, about how absurd all of this is. And Urnest, who has an entire wardrobe.

Why the swearing

Because the alternative is the special voice. Because “passed on” and “at rest” and “crossed the rainbow bridge” are not gentleness, they are fog, and fog is extremely profitable when someone is trying to sell you a casket at 2am. Plain words are a kindness. Sometimes the plain word is a swear.

The one rule

We joke about death so that we can talk about it. We never joke about your dead.

Death, the industry, embalming theatre, the memory-foam casket, our own guaranteed ends — all fair game, all the time. Your person, your animal, your loss, your faith, your grief — never. Not for a bit, not for a headline, not once.

We are not funeral directors, lawyers, or doctors. We are writers who got tired of how this subject gets handled. Check anything that matters legally or financially with someone licensed in your state.

Who’s asking

Small operation. Started 2026 because a real urn in a real house kept getting dressed up in tiny hats, and that turned out to help more than any of the pamphlets did.
